Aborym – Dirty (2013)

cover

Ever since Mysticum and Diabolos Rising/Raism disappeared form the Industrial Black Metal scene, there have been countless of uninspired bands and releases trying to achieve the same level of brutality, catchiness, and overall deranged awesomeness of said bands. Malignant Eternal and Aborym are the only two bands that ever came close to said greatness. With “Dirty”, Aborym returns with a double CD release filled with crazy electronics and massive drums, a considerably better effort than their previous release “Psychogrotesque”.

Opening with the average “Irreversible Crisis”, the band really kicks things off with the mega-catchy “Across The Universe”. Filled with very tense electronics and clean vocals, this track is nicely elevated by Faust’s supreme drumming abilities. The band nicely keeps the intensity up with “Dirty” and “Bleedthrough”, both very brutal tracks that are quite solid and well crafted. Our favorite track in this CD is the atmospheric “Rapped By Daddy”, a song that creates a very deranged atmosphere, perfect to creep out my neighbors by blasting it at 3 am on a Tuesday.

In terms of the biggest ‘dance-ish’ track in this release I have to say that “Face The Reptile” is the coolest one in this department.  Closing the CD with “The Day The Sun Stopped Shining”, we are left wanting more of these kinds of tracks that have cool trippy interludes surrounded by powerful riffs. On the second CD, the new version of “Roma Divina Urbs” is epic as fuck, making it immediately the best track on this release and nearly the whole release. The Iron Maiden cover of “Hallowed Be Thy Name” would have been pretty good if it wasn’t for the horrible clean vocals at the beginning that made us want to pierce our eardrums.

Being huge fans of the song “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd, we actually liked this version a lot thanks to the atmospheric elements. We are total haters of Nine Inch Nails, and the cover of “Hurt” feels very out of place in this release, with Aborym failing to make this song their own. The release closes with the very weird, but equally entertaining, “Need For Limited Loss”. While we are puzzled as why this album was a double CD, the second CD has some cool extra stuff for the diehard fans.

If you are a fan of Industrial Black Metal, or just like a little bit of extra madness on your BM, “Dirty” is a release that you will greatly enjoy. Aborym has been doing this for quite a while and has refined their trade over the years, since the addition of Faust to their ranks their sound has been much more massive and legitimately powerful. Do not hesitate to add this release to your collection since just by playing time alone is worth the expense for this kind of quality music.
