Galaktik Cancer Squad – Ghost Light (2013)

With four full-length releases in less than 3 years, today we have one man project Galaktik Cancer Squad and ‘their’ latest opus: “Ghost Light”. Pushing the boundaries of Black Metal with their visionary music, “Ghost Light” keeps things rolling for the band with five devastating tracks of crushing Black Metal with amazing Progressive elements and melodic influences. With over 50 minutes of music, this release has some very harsh and brutal Black Metal sections that puts the band ahead of their competition, rather than just focusing on copying bands like Enslaved, GSC has their own unique style of destruction.

The release starts very violently with the massive “Ethanol Nebula”, filled with hyper-fast drums and crushing guitar work. There are even some excellent Immortal-like guitars (around the 2 minute mark) that greatly add to the overall musical experience of this monumental track. The vocals are quite decent, but the complex music is what really gets you from this band. Things get considerably more melodic with the powerful “When the Void Whispers My Name”. Here the band reminded us of Agrypnie and their equally engaging and skillful Black Metal.

Our favorite track is the very diverse “In lichterlosen Weiten”, with a very harsh opening filled with blast-beats and growls, this song slowly transforms into more melodic and engaging territories. With amazing Post-Rock and atmospheric elements after the sixth minute, this track showcases the band’s abilities to transform their compositions into very diverse and genre-pushing epic songs. In terms of catchiness, “Ghost Light” replaces complexity for a catchier and more direct approach, resulting in a very engaging and entertaining track.

Ending this monumental release we have the catchy “Hypnose”, a track that features some serious melodic riffs and a very nice stop-and-go approach that will keep you headbanging for the most part of this song. Avoiding being too linear, GCS changes things up a bit near the end of this song, giving us that extra depth that we have come to expect from their music.

Overall, “Ghost Light” is another excellent release from Galaktik Cancer Squad. If you love interesting and genre-bending music, you will certainly appreciate this release. While we personally enjoyed “Celestia” a bit more, the band’s creativity and excellent musical abilities allow this release to be one of the best of 2013. Now on Hypnotic Dirge Records, GCS will surely get better recognition for their extreme musical antics.
