September Murder - He Who Invokes Decadence (2013)

cover

Germany has always been one of the best countries for Metal music to flourish over the years, with a huge scene and tons of quality bands emerging every year. Today we have September Murder and their sophomore release “He Who Invokes Decadence”. Delivering eight tracks of high quality Melodic/Progressive Death Metal, this band is ready for prime time and they have a very convincing case with this impressive release.

The album’s opening statement is “Under Severed Skies”, an excellent track that combines heavy intricate guitar work and crushing growls. The band is in no hurry of blasting you away, opting to deliver precise blows of hyper-fast sections surrounded by excellent melodic passages. The band’s old-school Death Metal influences are clear, but they manage to clean them up with incise guitar and bass guitar work in killer tracks like “Two Culprits, One Oath” and Death-esque “Among Vultures”.

Sort of splitting the release with the trippy instrumental “From Adoration...”, the band continues the album in a much more Progressive way, giving us flashbacks of older Opeth. Since the early years of Mercenary, we haven’t heard a band that could properly deliver the perfect mixture of aggressive Death Metal with Melodic undertones like on “...To Deterrence”. The drumming is quite amazing through the release, and thanks to an excellent production we can enjoy every single detail of it.

“May Conviction Force Reckoning” brings forth the first Opeth déjà vu moment with the awesome instrumental passage around the one-minute mark. The punishing “In Celebration Of Mankind's Wretchedness” also features a similar approach mixing brutal drumming and crushing DM sections with funky interludes. The pig squeals are quite powerful and nicely enhance the brutality of this song, bringing it to Grindcore heights. The band closes the release on a very Progressive high-note with the 11-minute long “He Who Invokes Decadence”, one of our favorite tracks in this release.

Featuring over 50 minutes of excellent and crushing music, September Murder makes a very convincing sophomore release with “He Who Invokes Decadence”. When we see band’s like this one unsigned, we can’t help but wonder what the hell is wrong with some labels. If you are looking for quality Death Metal with Melodic and Progressive elements, look no further and get yourself a copy of this release from the band’s website, you will NOT regret it.
