Amorphis – Circle (2013)

cover

Having set the bar ridiculously high with “The Beginning of Times”, Amorphis returns with yet another very impressive release that keeps setting new standards for the band. “Circle” features the band going a bit darker with some heavier songs, but with the every present melodic Amorphis signature style with soaring vocals and lush keyboards. Delivering nine tracks of pure brilliance the band reminds us why they are the kings of Finish Metal, in our opinion.

Unleashing their power immediately with “Shades of Gray”, Tomi J’s growls are as brutal as ever and make a great impact in the opening track. The classic Amorphis transitions from harsh sections to melodic passages are excellent as always thanks to the very efficient riffing. In a darker tone, “Mission” has a very energetic vibe thanks to the vocal arrangements and playful guitar work. One of the first singles of this release is the superbly catchy “The Wanderer”, a song where Tomi J’s vocals drive the track’s melodic elements.

One of our favorite tracks arrives under the name “Narrowpath”. In this song the combination of Esa’s lead guitar and Tomi K’s rhythm sections create a very effective backdrop for soaring vocal melodies and tight drumming. The little melodic section near the three minute mark is just amazing and quite memorable. The heavier guitar work is clearly present in the epic “Hopless Days”, a track where the emotional vocal lines greatly (and nicely) contrast said guitar work, making it quite enjoyable and engaging.

If you enjoy the heavier side of Amorphis, “Nightbird’s Song” gave us a little reminder of their earlier days when they used to be more aggressive, but they also managed to add their current melodic sound into the mix. “Into The Abyss” is our favorite track in this release thanks to the catchy chorus sections and very well-crafted guitar passages. For headbanging until your neck is sore, we recommend the excellent “Enchanted by the Moon”.

Closing with “A New Day”, the band ends this release with another typical melancholic Amorphis track that is epic in nature and very well constructed to highlight the vocal arrangements and the band’s power through melody. Overall, “Circle” is yet another very impressive release from the masters: Amorphis. If you liked any of their stuff post “Eclipse”, you will surely love this little gem.
