Mourning Beloveth – Formless (2013)

cover

Legendary Irish Death/Doom Metal outfit returns after four years with a double CD dosage of slowly asphyxiating music with “Formless”. Delivering six blows of brilliantly crafted 14+ minute songs (and a short one), the band makes a statement that they are the kings of the genre with such an impressive release.

Opening with the heavy hitting “Theories of old bones”, the band delivers a monolithic 14 minute introduction to what is next to come in this release. The band’s signature style is immediately present in this track and through the release with very minor adjustments over their previous release. The combinations of growls and clean vocals are pretty effective since they perfectly fuse the growls of Death/Doom and the signature traditional doom clean singing.

Dancing around the Funeral Doom genre, “Ethics on the precipice” really takes a bit to build-up in some sections, but their culmination is just a brilliant dosage of crushing riffs and inhuman growls. Like the ugly baby in the hospital, “Old rope” is a nice 4-minute song that feels a bit out of place when placed under behemoths of 14+ minutes. Our favorite track in this release is the moody “Dead channel”, where the band nicely builds up surrounded by very intricate drumming and devastating riffs.

In a very Candlemass fashion, “Nothing has a center” closes the first CD brilliantly. The clean vocals of guitarist Frank Brennan really bring this track together and create a very bleak atmosphere. The second CD features the hypnotic track “Transmissions” and it’s very mellow and odd structure. This song by far is the weirdest of the album, but it somehow fits just right with such an emotional set of songs presented in “Formless”.

Having waited for over 5 years for another full-length of Mourning Beloveth, we have to say that “Formless” is totally worth the wait. If you are a fan of excruciating Death/Doom and have tendencies to like Funeral Doom acts, this release will greatly fulfill your needs. The band keeps improving over the years and with this album they seem to be at the top of their game, we just hope we get to see them on tour someday, but until then we have this excellent release to keep us company.
