Sanguinary Misanthropia – Loathe Over Will (2012)

cover

Making its way from Australia, today we have Sanguinary Misanthropia and their traditional Black Metal debut full-length “Loathe Over Will”. Featuring 68 minutes of punishing Black Metal in the old-school way, this Australian band has a bit of that old Scandinavian BM vibe that has slowly been dying in the last few years.

Opening with the ritualistic “Revelations 16:4-6”, the band sets a very dark and mystical mood for this release, reminding us a bit of bands like Weapon and such that take carefully craft their Satanic message. Immediately making an impact with crushing old-school riffs in “Devil Everlasting”, the band sounds like the good old BM from the late 90’s before it all got ‘cool’. The distortion on the guitars creates this massive wall of sound that is very typical of older BM releases.

Moving into a more hellish tempo, “Bellum Ad Internecionem” steps things up with more upbeat drumming and superb screams that fit perfectly to the devastating nature of the music. The catchy riffs on songs like “Loathe Over Will” and “And I Smite Thee” are a staple in the genre an Sanguinary Misanthropia nails them perfectly. Clocking in at 10 minutes and change, “The Spirit if the Lord strives not with Man because He is of the Flesh” is our favorite track of this release thanks to its soul crushing progression and intricate guitar work.

Throughout this release the pulsating bass-guitar line does a great job to stay in the background during this release, and it is not afraid to come out and shine when called upon. Closing with the crushing tracks like “Sanctification Via Sin” and “The Unholy Sun Rises on the Evil” the band really sets the bar high for the next release in terms of quality of the music and their determination to sound like a traditional Black Metal machine.

Overall, “Loathe Over Will” is one hell of a release that will surely be having constant play time in our playlists. The band does an excellent job in crafting interesting (and long) BM tracks that do not rely on gimmicks or boring clichés to be effective and soul crushing. If you are a fan of true Black Metal from bands like Weapon, Nightbringer, Watain, etc., you should definitely check out Sanguinary Misanthropia and their killer sound.
