Fragments of Unbecoming - The Art of Coming Apart (2012)

cover

Like a bag bricks to the face, Fragments of Unbecoming delivers their fourth full-length release “The Art of Coming Apart”. Hailing from Germany, this band packs a mean punch with their high-octane riffing onslaught and killer vocals. Many bands try to pull-off Melodic Death Metal, but only a handful, like F.U.O, bring the pain in every single one of their tracks combining a furious pace and crafty melodic passages.

The clean opening of “The Art Of Coming Apart” nicely tricks your brain into thinking this will be a mellow track, just before blowing you away with hellish vocals and pummeling drums. The intensity of the band is the first thing that will impress you from them. Also, the ability to carve melodic sections into such brutal tracks is another excellent property of F.U.O, and can be heard in this opening track.

Like Dark Tranquility on crack, the band pummels through epic tracks like “Barren and Bleak”, “Four Winters”, and the punishing “Hours of Suffering”. The riffing on this last song is excellently executed and perfect for an intense headbanging session, resembling more a Technical Death Metal song. “Memorial Stone” gave us that Obscura vibe with its super tight drums and furious tempo, giving the band an even more aggressive and sonically brutal sound.

After slowing down the release with the instrumental “Sundown”, the band hits us back with two neck-snapping songs: “Trapping The Unseen” and “Seasons of Tranquility”. Said last track also features killer melodic passages that made it our favorite song of the album. The vocals are extremely brutal, and we love how their aggression greatly elevates the brutality of the music in general. Closing this album we have a creepy instrumental that nicely brings closure to the listener after such an intense release.

Blasting away since the first track, “The Art of Coming Apart” is one hell of a release. Fragments of Unbecoming are at the top of their game and these 10 tracks are perfect evidence of it. If you like your aggressive music with a melodic edge and excellent execution, then this is an album you don’t want to miss.
