Killjoy Corporation – Horsefly (2012)

cover

Hailing from Finland, today we have Killjoy Corporation and their latest EP titled “Horsefly”. With a cover that made us think this was a Punk release, the band has a very playful angle about it and some of the other band’s ‘serious elements. One thing for sure, they mean business when it comes to their crushing and very well crafted music. Mixing Melodic Death Metal with some Groove elements, the band sounds very fresh and engaging.

Blasting things wide open with “Bones”, the band sets a very hectic mood from the start with very powerful drumming and excellent melodic riffing. The vocals are quite ok for the genre, but the music is what makes this song entertaining. Things settle down for a bit with a crazy opening on “Infected Prey” that features the band’s ramblings at the beginning just before exploding into catchy Death Metal riffs and some growls. There are more melodic passages in this track that have some Thrash influences, reminding us of the latest Kreator and its melodic sections.

Our favorite song in this release is the very playful “Napalm Mute” and its weird-but-awesome bass guitar work. The odd stop-and-go attitude of this song makes it very unique and different, while still retaining the band’s aggressiveness and crushing sound. Closing the album with the monumental “Superior of God”, the band really leaves on a high-note with this high-octane riffing parade of a song. The band always keeps its antics up, and always has some odd and quirky little detail in each song that feels totally random and efficiently keeps the band from being too serious about itself.

Generally speaking, “Horsefly” is quite a Groove-tastic release that is both aggressive and well-crafted. Killjoy Corporation has a very energetic sound that many bands these days are missing, and the whole ‘making fun of themselves’ approach to things is quite funny and enjoyable from what we can read on their promo pack. So keep an eye out for this crazy outfit from Finland, and be sure to enjoy this short-but-sweet EP release.
