Closed Room – Closed Room (2012)

cover

After their impressive EP “White Bed Sheet”, we were thrilled to know that Closed Room signed with Sun & Moon Records to release their self-titled debut album. As many of the band’s in this label, Closed Room is a very unique ensemble that mixes Trip-Hop with Post-Metal and some Shoegaze elements brilliantly and in their previous work has delivered very interesting and engaging tracks drawing comparisons to Amesoeurs and such bands.

Setting the mood with the Post-Metal influenced “Behind the Locked Door”, the band nicely established very high expectations for a very unique sounding release. This track reminds us a bit of the experimental side of bands like Sigh and Ephel Duath. Things turn dark with the Blackgaze riffing of “Tempted to Illuminated”, then the ethereal vocals of Morena kick in and the whole atmosphere suddenly feels a bit different. This track is very well crafted and the contrast between the music and the vocals is just outstanding and works very well.

The atmospheric “Black Hall” borders more in Trip-Hop territory, but thanks to the vocal performance it keeps the listener engaged and very expectant of what is coming next from the band. Our absolute favorite song from this band is the electric “Fly to the Sunshine”. This track feels like Amesoeurs came back to life and recorded just one more song. The atmosphere is very exciting and the overall vibe of this track is just amazing. Truly one of the best songs we have heard in 2012.

After another weird Trip-Hop track with “In The Closed Room”, the band moves into new directions with the Jazzy “White Bed Sheet”, a song that feels a bit weird the first few listens, but then it really grows on you. The Post-Rock/Metal meets Jazz influences of “Winter Sun” make it quite an enjoyable piece that feels very relaxed and helps you clear out your head very easily. The oddest song in this release comes under the name of “Blue Velvet”, a track that combines Post-Black Metal sections with the trippy jazzy influences of previous tracks. This song sounds like a combination of Lifelover and Björk, very strange, but also very good.

Closing with an atmosphere piece, “Slowing Down Breathe (Part II)” and another weird trippy-heavy song “The Barrier”, this release delivers a very unique experience all across the board. If you are not afraid of experimental music, Closed Room delivers a very rewarding aural experience that involves plenty of different genres and interesting combinations of them.
