Trioscapes – Separate Realities (2012)

cover

In the category of musical porn, today we have Trioscapes and their ridiculously technical (and equally intoxicating) debut release “Separate Realities”. The band formed by Dan Briggs (of Between the Buried and Me), Walter Fancourt on tenor saxophone/flute, and Matt Lynch on drums, is out to conquer audiences with their intoxicating mixture of Prog Rock, Fussion, and Psychedelic Rock, all packed into a funky sexy package that will get you laid guaranteed.

Open with the Yes-esque “Blast Off”, the trio delivers a pretty impressive dance between instruments since the first second. The percussions are outstanding and they are very precise to offset the sexy saxophone lines. The bass line is nothing short of extraordinary, making us wonder with is Dan playing with Between the Buried and Me, and not a better band ($$$).

The 11-minutes epic “Separate Reality” delivers a faster pace and some very intricate drum patterns. There is even something that sounds like a marimba thrown into the mix, making this track a delight if you are a musician yourself and realize the complexity level behind it. As a regular listener, the track is very engaging and constantly evolving. The psychedelic tracks “Curse of the Ninth” and “Wazzlejazzlebof” keep pushing the envelope when it comes to intricate percussions, distorted bass guitar sections and crazy saxophone lines. It is not even fair how good this band sounds together.

Our favorite track of this release is the extremely trippy “Celestial Terrestrial Commuters”, we love how the sax goes one way, the bass guitar line goes another and the drums somewhat keeps them together in the opening of this track. Closing with “Gemini’s Descent”, the album ends with a very typical progressive vibe mixed with some tribal-sounding elements that will puzzle you for a bit, until the fully sink in.

In general “Separate Realities” is a ridiculously good release. All musicians are top notch and they have managed to craft a very intricate and fun sounding release. If you are interesting in true artistic expression, this release is something you might really appreciate, just don’t expect any Metal in this album.
