Earth – Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II (2012)

cover

As a perfect continuation/extension of their acclaimed (and excellent) “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I”, Earth is releasing the second part of this masterpiece in 2012. The new album titled “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II”, keeps the very hypnotic sound of the first one and extends it for over 45 minutes more.

With a very whimsical approach to music, Earth continues to break the molds and produces five tracks of brilliant atmospheric quality that almost nobody else can pull off. The minimalist nature of the band’s compositions will have you at the edge of your seat waiting for what is next and you will react to it. Moving away from the Drone/Doom Metal the band used to execute, this record feels like a right of passage into a more mature and different age for Earth.

Once the first magical notes of “Sigil of Brass” hit, we immediately felt relaxed and at ease. It has been a while that a release with such a ‘quiet’ content has made us stop doing whatever else we are doing and fully focus on it. Like a perfect soundtrack for one of those IFC art-house cinema movies, this release is very emotional and also very discrete about it.

“His Teeth Did Brightly Shine” is nicely flows into a very hypnotic groove and before you even know it 9 minutes have flown by. With a bit of a more determined pace, “Waltz (A Multiplicity of Doors)” delivers a very mysterious vibe that is very nicely achieved by the percussions and the cello of Lori Goldston. The album itself has a very organic vibe and seems to be achieved by the improvisational approach to the music.

“The Corascene Dog” begins with a very trippy bass guitar line, and thanks to the addition of the cello, the song is very powerful and dense. Looming over a few repetitions of the same section, the overall mood is very complex and yet very direct and emotive. This is our favorite track of the release and probably even the whole “Angels I and II” saga. Before closing things, “The Rakehell” delivers 12-minutes of the jazzier side of Earth’s experimentation. The track has some nice guitar work to it and the pace of things just makes it more magical, there is also that psychedelic rock edge that gives this song an extra dimension over the previous ones.

Overall, if you are an Earth fan, this release will surely blow you away. The band’s experimental skills are top notch and are fully in tune when it comes to crafting epic tracks of pure emotions. There is not a single weak section in “Angels II” and we are very nicely surprised by this. When you play both albums one after the other one you can seamlessly listen to them without noticing exactly when you switched releases due to the albums musical nature. Earth improvisational skills on this release shine to the maximum extent and will have you going back on each song just to discover more an more nuisances that you didn’t note on the previous listen.
