Woburn House – Sleep Summer Storm (2011)

cover

After getting a quadrillion Sludge releases that all sound the same, it is quite refreshing to listen to Woburn House’s “Sleep Summer Storm”. In their third full-length release, the band delivers eight tracks of very interesting sounding music that mixes Progressive and Atmospheric elements with a hefty Doom-ier Sludge, something that we can’t really say we have heard before.

Opening with “Willow”, the band delivers heavy riffs and a nice paced tempo that allows the mood of the song (and album) to nicely set it. The drowsy vocals are excellent for this type of music and greatly add to the overall atmosphere of the release. In faster pace and with a more bizarre atmosphere, “Shifter” shows that the band can shake things up a bit and still achieve the same interesting sound. The guitar work is very well crafted and the tempo set by the drumming is just perfect for this kind of music. For more Progressive/Post-Metal-ish guitars, “Rain Keeps Falling Down” has a hefty dose of them.

Our favorite track of this release has to be the album titled “Sleep Summer Storm”. The mood again is very relaxed and the vocals gives that solemn vibe very nicely, reminding us of bands like Of The Wand and the Moon and similar acts. The electro-acoustic passages are very well crafted and the atmospheric elements greatly add to the dense and dark feeling of the song. Coming close second to the best track of the album, we have “A Simple Man” and its powerful bass guitar track.

Perfectly closing with “Hood”, we are left very pleased with what we just heard. The band does a great job in taking Sludge influences and blending them into their own unique blend of music. There is nothing to hectic or explosive in this release, but the mood and atmosphere is just amazing like it is. With a perfect production, excellent instrumentation and very fresh and original music, we can only see great things in the future for Wodburn House. Do yourself a favor and get this album from Zeitgeister Music as soon as you can.
