Kaktus Project – Superstition (2011)

cover

Delivering an impressive debut solo album, today we have Sylvain Rouvière and his Kaktus Project release “Supersition”. Featuring 13 songs of well crafted Heavy/Power Metal with Hard Rock influences, this release is a very nice showcase of both Sylvain’s vocal and guitar playing abilities.

Unlike many side project releases, “Superstition” truly showcases the musician’s ability and not his countless buddy’s that make guest appearances on the album. Since the opener track “Farewell” we have soaring vocals and very well crafted guitar work, this track reminds us a bit of older Timmo Tolki-era Stratovarius. Moving on with “Superstition”, we get some hints of Edguy/Avantasia in this very entertaining song.

For the Heavy Metal fans we have tracks like “Above the Flames”, a typical power anthem that will surely grab the attention of old school listeners. The typical power ballad makes its way with the name of “Tonight”, allowing the album to flow very naturally. With “Alone in the Dark” we get a taste of nice Power Metal sections with catchy keyboards.

The second power ballad “My Tears”, delivers an even deeper emotional level thanks to the very effective Cello’s. Before closing things down, we still have “Resurrection” and its playful feeling that makes the song very entertaining and nicely crafted. However, the last track is a cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” that made us want to kill ourselves. I will never understand why people try to cover songs and make radical changes that will make your ears bleed due to not so good vocals and weird arrangements. We have loved every single track of this release except this last cover song.

If you are looking for a release that has almost everything between Heavy to Power Metal to Hard Rock covered, “Superstition” is definitely work your time and money. Filled with brilliant guitar work and soaring vocals (and of course great instrumentation for the rest), this album will surely guarantee you a high replay value. Sylvain Rouvière is clearly a gifted and talented musician but he should stay away from covers.
