Avsky – Malignant (2008)

cover

Avsky hails from Sweden and they attack us with their latest album “Malignant”. This album is considerably better than their previous release “Mass Destruction”. This band plays some raw and brutal old school black metal that will have every fan of the genera banging their heads.

This two man band makes a chilling impression since their first song and never let go. Each song is defined by raw sounding distorted guitars and some bone chilling vocals that would have every listener having nightmares for a few weeks.

The band’s sound is very raw like in the old times of band releases in cassette. And this rawness is the good type, not the shit-sounding-let’s-make-it-more-raw-so-people-can’t-notice-we-can’t-play type of rawness. The band has been perfecting this sound throughout their previous releases, and now they have achieved almost a perfect old school black metal sound.

The guitar riffs, while not the most inventive, fit perfectly with the overall atmosphere of the album. The mid-tempos make this release also enjoyable, compared to other blast beating let’s play all this as fast as we can releases.

If I had to describe this album in three words for somebody to go and buy it, I would use: brutal, brutal and misanthropic (read the lyrics). And I’m pretty sure fans of the genre would greatly appreciate this recommendation.
