Divinity – The Singularity (2010)

cover

There are countless European bands that play great Melodic Death Metal with hints of Progressive, Thrash and even Modern Metal elements, but there aren’t many that can pull it off on this side of the pond. Canadian Divinity is one of the few that can make this claim on North America and it’s ready to kick-ass at a world wide level.

The band originally self-released ‘The Singularity” late in 2009 and has gotten rave reviews from almost everywhere we can see, and this comes as no surprise since this release is top-notch and puts many others to shame. While we personally would categorize Divinity as a Modern Metal band, there are so many genres fuse together that it would be completely unfair to rule them out based on their ‘primary’ style.

The first thing that sticks out of “The Singularity” is the brilliant guitar work that the two guitar players of Divinity created for this album. There are countless thrashy riffs, melodic passages, and blistering solos, what else can you ask from a band on their second full-length release. The drumming is massive and very crisp, greatly aided by the superb production sounds very tight and well timed.

Vocal wise, the grows and harsh screams are pretty standard for a Melodic Death Metal/Modern Metal release, but the occasional clean vocals completely kill the groove for me. While we understand that bands want to show off their clean pipes and try to appeal to a larger audience we don’t like when they ruin fast and aggressive music with clean singing. This little detail can be overlooked since they are not too persistent, but we feel that they could have done without them.

Another interesting thing this band has is that they feature many groove metal elements that makes them sound like Fear Factory sometimes and this just wins them extra points in our book. Some people might say that the clean sections are Burton-like, but they are fucking deaf there is no way they are similar.

In general, “The Singularity” is a pretty solid Melodic DM/Modern Metal release that features a very promising band behind it. There is definitely some level of originality behind this release, but we wish the band can craft a more unique sound of their own and stop borrowing from so many others. The album gets released on Candlelight Records in August for North American metal heads so we recommend you pre-order your copy now.
