Society's Plague - The Human, The Canvas (2010)

cover

With a very ‘commercial friendly’ sound, today we get Society’s Plague. Hailing from the USA, this band plays a mean mixture of Melodic/Progressive Death Metal with Metalcore influence. Setting aside our ‘differences of opinion’ with Metalcore bands, Society’s Plague is actually one hell of a band that will blow you away since the first song on their debut full-length release “The Human, The Canvas”.

This American band has some Swedish Melodic DM influences in their sound and we love it. When most kids these days are focusing on creating songs with breakdowns every 30 seconds, Society’s Plague focuses more on crafting dual guitar melodies like almost no other new-coming band. The bands guitarists combine both skill and great songwriting skills on this album, making the band have a very dynamic and diverse sound.

Another thing we quickly notice is that Society’s Plague uses a keyboard player that does a great job in providing the correct amount of atmosphere to the band’s already solid sound. The harsh vocals are also very good and help give the music that aggressive edge that many bands fail to achieve. When the clean vocals come, we feel like murdering kittens, but for the genre they are also very solid.

Yes there are some breakdowns here and there, but they are not the primary force driving this band to make music. Sometimes they work fine, but some other times they feel a bit ripped off from bands of the genre. But overall, the band’s songwriting abilities are top notch, something unexpected from such a young band.

For around 45 minutes you will be treated to good a very solid Melodic/Progressive Death Metal album that sometimes transforms into Metalcore, but its overall solid enough to make this band rise from the rest. While most bands are sticking to a particular style of Metalcore, Society’s Plague does a good job in combining elements of different genres and not sounding (completely) like everybody else.

If you don’t mind some Metalcore in your Melodic/Progressive DM then we greatly urge you to buy this solid debut album. From such a young and promising band we expect very solid releases in the future, so keep an eye open for them. We could only hope that most of these bands with potential would drop their Metalcore stuff from their sound, but that would just be too good to be true.
