Sabbath Assembly - Restored to One (2010)

cover

With a highly elaborate theological foundation we have Sabbath Assembly, a gathering of musicians featuring Jex Thoth. Following the ideologies of Process Church of the Final Judgment a cult from the 60’s and 70’s, Sabbath Assambly’s “Restored to One” is a ‘re-charging’ of this cult’s hymns and brought to the general audience in form of psychedelic rock songs.

We love anything that has to do with theology, and especially stuff about cults so “Restored to One” is a very interest release for us. The whole idea of having three great gods of the universe in Jehovah, Lucifer and Satan, sound like a crack-pot theory that my friend would cook up during an acid trip. However, not all ideas behind the Process Church were as crazy as this one.

Going back to the music, “Restored to One” features 9 intoxicating songs, that if this is what church/gospel music would normally sound like, we would be in attendance every day. With the mesmerizing voice of Jex Thoth and the psychedelic rock melodies, every song in “Restored to One” is a trip by it-self.

As the ‘original versions’ of these hymns seem to never have been recorded before, we don’t have much of a comparison basis, but we are sure they could never sound as good as how Sabbath Assembly arranged them for “Restored to One”. Our favorite tracks are “Glory to the Gods in the Highest” and “And the Phoenix is Reborn”, but then again, all tracks have their own little magic to make them memorable.

We are not bothered by one bit that all tracks in this album feature crack-pot ideas and ‘religious’ intent. We appreciate the music for how it sounds and it’s composed. But if we were to ever be fooled into drinking the Kool-Aid, Jex Thoth and her angelic voice would be the only one that could achieve this. So if you want to listen to something different and ideologically charged, go ahead and drink Sabbath’s Assembly Kool-Aid.
