Interview with Belphegor (Helmut)

"Walpurgis Rites - Hexenwahn" has just been released worldwide and we had a few minutes to ask questions to Belphegor's Helmut. He talks about the ideas behind the new album, their latest video among many other interesting things.

Infernal Masquerade: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, and let’s get started:

Yeah, WALPURGIS RITES - HEXENWAHN is released, worldwide and we are goddamn ready to rumble.

How do you think the band’s sound has evolved since you guys first started playing music?

To becoming mightier, more intense with every opus has always been our aim since 1993 as we started under the BELPHEGOR banner. Each time and album we give our best, experiment a bit to keep things fresh u know and raise intensity and dynamics in the name of the devil.

U know, we always shredded the brutal Metal of Death, with aggressive Black Metal influences, and everyone knows what to expect from this band.

What is the concept behind “Walpurgis Rites - Hexenwahn”? Where do you come up with ideas for the lyrics?

The music comes first and dominates everything, the rest is death, devil and sex, this was the case in the early days of the band, and so it remains today. If u like it cool, highly appreciated, if not, fukk off!!!! If u re offended, also fine by me WALPURGIS RITES - HEXENWAHN is about the celebration on the night from April 30 to May 1. Better known as the Walpurgisnacht, the okkult celebration on the mountains.

HEXENWAHN is and old archaic word, it don t exist anymore - created by the damn church against free - thinking people, witches, celebrations whatever. The meaning is like witch plague. I really recomment the lyrical content on the new album...its sick.

How was the whole process behind the recording of “Walpurgis Rites - Hexenwahn” did it go smooth as expected or did you guys had some bumps on the road?

Har har. This Werk is our most mature effort, the nine tracks reached a higher level of dynamics, all is damn epic, and all nine sound collages are more varied, thats one of the strongest points of the new monster. Also, we used some haunting samples here and there, to give the album a cold and ritualistic feel. WALPURGIS RITES - HEXENWAHN sounds exactly as we wanted it to.

How did you come up with the title of Belphegor’s last album “Bondage Goat Zombie”?

BONDAGE = The album deals with S/M you know and overall inspired by the themes in the work of Marquis de Sade.
THE GOAT = our trademark..
ZOMBIE = This goes along with my opinion that there are people who are fucked up zombies who sleep-walk the earth, infesting it like a plague.

Combine those ideas and you have the title, also the message is clear, its about rebellion in man, free will and to take your own decision, walk your own path,....in my opinion freedom is the most important thing in life

The band recently filmed a video for the track ‘Der Geistertreiber’. Can you tell us more about the visuals in the video, and the extremely hot chick on it?

DER GEISTERTREIBER is direct and heavy and in German language, was an interesting experiment to create this track, sounds like a dance of death. First time that we hired a proff. camera team . We rented a cottage on the mountain, in the wood, spended three days there. Yeah the witch, Gabriela, is hot as fukk. The clip is amazing, full of magick and blackest erotic, check it out: www.myspace.com/belphegor

How do you expect the audiences to react when you will be touring with Alestorm, Vreid and others? Do people get thrown off because of the different styles between bands?

Hope the die hard demons are ready and celebrate real Metal with BELPHEGOR., u know, I don t care so much about other bands/ scenes etc. We do what we always do, plug the shit in and shred as fast as fukk, expect musickwise a punch in your face,...uhm, takes u straight to hell.

How many Belphegor albums do you think you have left in you? Will you be doing excellent music forever?

We re motivated and high on fire. Masterplan is now nonstop touring, we start in November to terrorize Usa/ Canada, Mexico, Brazil and in January Europe.

If you had unlimited budget for a live DVD recording what stage props and setup would you use and why? (We had some pretty cool answers from other bands, like riding on a giant white hamster on stage, so get creative with the answers)

Alot fire, blood, skulls, bones, bdsm, excess...

Any special collaboration with other bands any of the band members has going on? Or are there any collaborations you guys are interested in doing?

Its all about BELPHEGOR.

Any thing else you want to add for our readers and your fans?

Fukk off har har har.

Thanks for the interview and good luck with the promotion of the new album.
