Loathfinder – The Great Tired Ones (2017)

cover

Every few months we get a mysterious package from Poland wrapped around very creatively with saran wrap and newspaper. Arriving from Godz ov War productions, we get a pretty good variety of Death and Black Metal underground bands, one of the standouts this month has to be Loathfinder. Unleashing four tracks and over 28 minutes on their debut EP “The Great Tired Ones”, this Polish one-man battalion focuses on mixing elements of Black/Death Metal with Doom/Sludge guitar work.

Opening with the catchy “Genetic Gloom”, a layer of thick riffing and harsh growls sets the mood for this release. While featuring heavy riffs and a dense atmosphere, the song has a certain Sludgy edge to it that keeps it interesting and different from other bands. The album’s most engaging song has to be “Feast on My Entrails”, where we have ripping melodic riffs and devilish harsh vocals. This track features solid headbanging passages thanks to its extreme catchiness.

Loathfinder continues to deliver powerful songs with the punishing “Scents of Regression” and its funky tempo changes. This track has a certain old-school Death Metal vibe, but with a different riffing style, making it quite interesting to hear. Saving the longest and more experimental for last, the album title track clocks in around 9 minutes and after a brief intro it explore some more dynamic structures with a livelier bass guitar line and some trippy and atmospheric guitar work.

Ovearll, “The Great Tired Ones” is a pretty solid release filled with heavy songs that explore multiple genres and come together quite nicely. While all the ideas are nicely there, the band does fall into some repetition that could be avoided in the future with fresher riffs. That being said, Loathfinder has an interesting style that will only get better with time, so be sure to keep an eye out for these guys.
