Nemesis Sopor – MMXL (2017)

cover

Hailing from Germany, today we have one of the best Black Metal releases of 2017. Perfectly combining furious onslaughts with moody atmospheric elements, Nemesis Sopor delivers over 57 minutes of majestically crafted music that captivate the listener. Highly recommended for those fans of very refined melancholic Black Metal, “MMXL” is one of those releases that will command your full attention as it unravels fully after more than a handful of listens.

The album opens with a ferocious 15-minute piece titled “Untertan”, which give a little taste of what is to come. This track has it all: blisteringly fast sections, solemn melancholic passages, and very powerful transitions, making this song very unique and a true tour de force performance... just to start the album. Providing a lush breather, we have the instrumental “Saat”, just before things speed up again with the expansive “Herscher”. This track delivers more incisive riffing and crushing harsh vocals paired with a very mysterious tempo and brilliant atmospheric sections.

Continuing with the intense “Despot”, we are treated to demoralizing riffs and a certain Doomy BM vibe is quite chilling and unique. We particularly enjoy this track’s playful guitar arrangements courtesy of A.B and R.S. For those looking into more atmospheric pieces, the album title track provides a nice build up and brilliant Post-Rock/Metal influences thrown into the mix. “Atarax” keeps things going with more dreamy guitarscapes and crafty drumming, while being aggressive and highly atmospheric.

Saving one of the best for last, the majestic “Zeit der Sterne” closes this release with lush clean guitars and very emotive harsh vocals. The BM riffs are perfectly contrasted by the throbbing bass guitar line, and combined they create a very mournful BM sound. Overall, “MMXL” is one hell of a release that is very well-crafted and showcases the band’s superbly refined sound. If you like bands like Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room and other artists like Tenhi and Empyrium, you will certainly love this release.
