Black Skies – Hexagon (2009)

cover

Black Skies is a 3 man band that hails from North Carolina, USA. The band’s musical style is Sludge Metal, and they do a pretty kick ass job at playing the genre.

Having formed only 3 years ago, the band’s sound is pretty well defined and the band has been gaining momentum since playing at SXSW in Austin, TX.

While Sludge Metal is not my favorite genre, I do enjoy a good album once in a while, and this satisfaction was brought to me this month by “Hexagon” the band’s second EP. The EP is being released on a limited edition vinyl presentation by I’m Better Than Everyone Records and if you like Sludge, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

“Hexagon” features 23 minutes of pretty solid Metal that has very crunchy guitar riffs and while the music is very basic, it’s also very effective and transferring that feeling that American Sludge Metal has. The musicians in this band have great chemistry within them and they clearly show it on the album.

The drumming is effective enough to keep all the riffs together, making the vocals sound pretty natural. While you will not get a super original release, you are still getting a quality album from a young and promising band.
