Syrach – A Dark Burial (2009)

cover

Hailing from Norway this band plays some kind of mix of Doom Metal and Death Metal. The overall sound of the band is very old school as you cannot find any elements of modern metal in their music, and while sometimes this is a good thing it does not work too well for Syrach.

“A Dark Burial” presents us with 6 tracks of ‘slow’ death metal that will bore you until the albums best song “A Mourner’s Kiss”. I was lost and found my self checking how long did the song had left for the first three tracks, then got to the best song, and again into the same droning trance that was about to put me to sleep.

I liked the band’s previous release “Days of Wrath” partly because Silje from The Gathering sang in a couple of songs in that album, but the magic of that guest appearance is currently gone. The best thing I can find in this album is the raspy growly vocals and that’s pretty much it, they evoke the good old times of Death Metal and reminded me of old Sinister and the old DM bands from the Netherlands.

The guitar riffs are unimaginative and just make this album drag for 34 minutes, I’m counting off the good track of the album which lasts 11 minutes.

I must say that unless you are a fan of the band, or just feel like buying a CD to lullaby you to sleep just stay away from this album.
