Ava Inferi – Blood Of Bacchus (2009)

cover

Having formed in 2005 Ava Inferi presents us their 3rd full length album. The band shows great maturity and improvement in their already characteristic sound, with “Blood Of Bacchus”.

Ava Inferi’s mixture of Doom Metal with Gothic elements is unparalleled, blending the traditional Doom riffs with mesmerizing female vocals provided by Carmen Simões, and the guitar work is provided by none other than Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen from Aura Noir (the self labeled ugliest band in the world) and Mayhem, which he left in order to fully concentrate on Ava Inferi.

“Blood Of Bacchus” features 9 haunting hymns that showcase the band’s sound to perfection. The band’s sound has clearly been refined throughout their previous two releases. With their solid lineup the band has achieved a very unique sound that few bands can say they have, since Ava Inferi sounds like no other band.

The riffing in “Blood Of Bacchus” is a bit more ‘heavy’ than in their previous releases but it does not take anything away from the slow and ‘doomy’ sound of the band, the vocal arrangements are top notch and I was impressed when I saw the band live that they sound pretty much the same. The drumming is one the band’s most under rated elements, but in my opinion it’s what holds the music together creating a perfectly paced foundation track that is accompanied by the bass guitar as well as the previously mentioned elements.

If all that I’ve mentioned is not enough to convince you, then you have to know that ‘Blood Of Bacchus” features guest performances by none other than Kristoffer Rygg’s (a.k.a Garm) one of my favorite vocalists in metal, and others at cello and piano.

Overall “Blood Of Bacchus” is still an improvement over their great previous albums, I’m very pleased by this release, and I will be looking forward to whatever else the band puts out in the future. Be sure to check them out live also, since they put on a very powerful live performance.
