Aenaon – Hypnosophy (2016)

cover

Finally ready to take the scene by storm, today we have Greece’s Aenaon and their latest full-length release “Hypnosophy”. Having refined their music over the year years of their existence, the band is ready to take the spotlight with this very mature and musically brilliant release. Perfectly blending experimental elements into a highly efficient Progressive Black Metal foundation, the band delivers 55 minutes of intense music.

The album opens with the magnificent, “Oneirodynia”, a track that combines influences of Emperor, Ihsahn, and Arcturus in a very tight and perfectly executed nearly 8 minutes piece. The band has added a permanent saxophone player, which adds a good deal of depth and originality to their music. Not disappointing the band’s fans of heavier pieces, tracks like “Fire Walk With Me” deliver relentless high octane experiences.

One of our personal favorite tracks has to be the psychotic “Earth Tomb” and its very seductive melodic passages. We particularly enjoy how the band manages to mix melancholic sax elements into their excellent riffing and vocal arrangements. For the fans of the more experimental and mellow side of the band we have: “Void” reminds us a bit of Madder Mortem meets Ihshan, and the jazzy and trippy “Thus Ocean Swells” filled with cool tempo changes and interesting percussions.

For those that like the madness of bands like DHG and Age of Silence, “Tunnel” delivers that kind of vibe with solid tempo changes and funky vocals. Closing the release with the intoxicating “Phronesis – Psychomagic”, the band saves one of the most unique tracks for last.

Constantly improving their skills while bending the limits of Black Metal, Aenaon manages to deliver their most mature and interesting release to date. The band has finally refined their identity and has produced 55 minutes of unique music that any fan of experimental/Progressive Black Metal will enjoy. If you like unique and bizarre elements in your BM with progressive touches, this is definitely one album you can’t afford to miss.
