Throes of Dawn – Our Voices Shall Remain (2016)

cover

Hailing from Finland, today we have the legendary Throes of Dawn finally delivering a new release after six years of waiting. As one of the first Finish Progressive/Melodic Black Metal bands in the 90’s, their sound has truly evolved into a magical combination of Atmospheric/Progressive/Gothic/Dark Metal elements. Featuring over 65 minutes of music, the seven tracks presented in “Our Voices Shall Remain” will transport the listener to very emotional melodic realms.

Slowly building up with the hypnotic atmosphere of “Mesmerized”, the band creates a very subtle dreamy vibe thanks to the distant guitars and bass guitar line. The band’s earlier Black Metal days are still infused in the music, as songs like “We Used to Speak in Colours” start off quite heavily and slowly mellow into the album’s groove. Only using clean vocals, Henri Koivula, manages to sound a bit like Jukka Vuorinen from Decoryah, adding an extra layer of emotions to the music, tracks like “Lifelines” are a perfect example of this.

One of our personal favorite tracks is the majestic “The Undestranding”, which features tons of mellow vocal harmonies and very expressive guitar leads. All of the elements come perfectly together creating a very melancholic and truly emotional experience. Instantly evoking comparisons to Anathema and Porcupine Tree, “Our Voices Shall Remain” has that certain Progressive Rock vibe to it that makes it quite engaging and aurally rewarding.

As one of the album’s highest points, the chilling “One of Us is Missing” perfectly delivers waves of emotion in the shape of subtle atmospheric keyboards, sweeping guitars, and truly demoralizing vocals. Saving the most experimental piece for last, “The Black Wreath of Mind” is a 14-minute odyssey that features Jazzy and more free-form guitar work and percussions than the rest of the album. Very solid closer, for such a diverse and unique release.

Overall, Throes of Dawn is truly a superbly talented band that knows no boundaries when it comes to musical limits. The band has slowly evolved their heavier earlier sound into a very expressive and melancholic form of art and “Our Voices Shall Remain” is the perfect testament for it. If you like Proggy and atmospheric music filled with melancholy, similar to bands like Decoryah, Antimatter, Anathema, and even Pinky Floyd, look no further and pick up a copy of this masterpiece.
