Morphinist – Terraforming (2016)

cover

From the mastermind behind Galaktik Cancer Squad, today we have Morphinist and their original debut release album from 2013 which didn’t see the light of day until 2016. In “Terraforming”, this one-man battalion delivers 35 minutes of truly skilled Atmospheric Black Metal with some Post-Black Metal and Doom influences. If you are a fan of Argwohn’s unique musical vision with GCS, you will definitely enjoy this one.

Opening with the 15 minute behemoth “Terraforming I”, the album starts in a very Doom-like manner with crushing riffs and a very sluggish tempo. After some more mood setting passages, things blow up with a furious BM pace. The transitions are quite seamless and very well delivered, making such changes not contrasting but rather complementary in an extremely unique way.

The hypnotic nature of “Terraforming II” makes it quite relaxing until a barrage of BM shrieks and intense drumming change the landscape. Argwohn’s ability to craft very unique songs is quite uncanny, and while the same structural elements are there, he finds ways of re-shaping the tracks for them to sound different and transport the listener.

Closing with “Terraforming III”, the intensity picks up and this track features some intense BM riffing moments perfectly aligned between atmospheric passages. Clocking in at 14 minutes, this track showcases the level of musicianship in this one man project while exploring multiple musical influences, styles and tempos.

Overall, “Terraforming” is one hell of a release that once more showcases the musical skills of Argwohn. Reminding us of bands like Harakiri for the Sky and Agrypnie, Morphinist features a very engaging and mature sound that captures the listener’s attention very quickly. If you are into highly atmospheric Black Metal and love Post-Black Metal bands and how they push the genre, look no further and get yourself hooked on this band.
