Weeping Silence – Opus IV Oblivion (2015)

cover

Hailing from Malta, today we have a very pleasant surprise with Weeping Silence’s latest release, “Opus IV Oblivion”. Oozing with old-school Gothic Death/Doom melancholy, this release instantly brought us back to the old days of Silentium, Trail of Tears, Even Song with some Dreams of Sanity sprinkled into the mix. If you like the whole beauty and the beast vocal approach, this is right up your alley.

Opening with some disarmingly powerful riffs, “Oblivion – Darkness in My Heart Anno XV” sets a very temperamental mood. The use of classical string instruments in this track gives it a certain early Lacrimas Profundere vibe, making the track even more powerful and punishing. With Diane Camenzuli and Dario Pace Taliana alternating between sweet female vocals and heavy growls, the band’s vocal duo does a great job in keeping songs fluid and engaging.

The band has great expertise in setting up very atmospheric songs that are quite contrasting and very melancholic like “Eyes of the Monolith” and “Gothic Epitaph”. Pleasantly bringing back memories of bands like Within Temptation (earlier days) and Theatre of Tragedy, the band nicely craves their own signature sound and contribution thanks to Diane’s very talented and dynamic vocals. Providing a plethora of intricate riffs, Mario Ellul and Manuel Spiteri keep all songs filled with crushing Death/Doom riffs that rival any big-name band of the genre.

As one of our favorite tracks, “Transcending Destiny” is filled with beautiful vocal melodies that will hypnotize the listener. The subtle piano/keyboard arrangements nicely elevate the song’s atmosphere. The traditional ballad-esque track could not be missing in this release, as “Bury My Fairytale” provides for a very dramatic and mellow piece. Overall, “Opus IV Oblivion” is one heck of a release is you like old-school Gothic Death/Doom Metal, the band delivers nine crisp songs that will transport you to a very magical place. So if you are a fan of the genre, be sure not to miss this spectacular release.
