The Gathering – TG25: Diving Into the Unknown (2014)

cover

As one of the most influential bands in the last 20 years, The Gathering changed many people’s idea of how music should evolved and have been delivering high-quality releases since their early days. After going on hiatus earlier this year, we were nothing but jealous to hear they would be doing a couple of celebratory shows in honor of their 25 years of existence with musicians that played with them over the years… including Anneke.

Unfortunately, this massive three CD compilation does not include any live recordings of the band’s landmark shows but it does feature enough material to keep any fan of the band entertained for quite a while. The other little issue we have against this release is that it only features two unreleased tracks out of a total of 39, giving occasional The Gathering fans and collectors little incentives to buy this release.

The first CD contains 15 of the band’s most popular singles including “Strange Machines”, “Leaves”, “Saturnine”, and some older goodies like “Stonegarden”. The second CD also includes familiar material, like some of our favorite tracks “Nighttime Birds” and “Amity”. On the last CD they have put it all the “A Sound of Relief” recordings, our personal favorite live album of the band and have included two unreleased tracks recorded in Chile back in 2010. These tracks are acoustic renditions of “No One Spoke” and “Treasure”, recorded with very high quality. For us, having almost every single release from the band, we are driven to buy this release just for those two tracks.

Overall, the band’s career is has had many amazing releases and they are represented in this massive release. For the ‘average’ Gathering fan that is not a hardcore collector, we don’t find a lot of compelling reasons for them to buy this album. However, if you are a collector, the packaging looks super sweet, and if you are looking to get into the band, this is probably the best resource to do so.
