ReVamp – Sabaton – Iced Earth – Slim’s, San Francisco, CA – 5/3/2014

After moving to the Bay area, we have been delighted to see the amount of shows that we can potentially attend. We finally jumped at the opportunity of covering one of the most anticipated tours of 2014 featuring ReVamp, Sabaton and veterans Iced Earth. Being huge fans of Sabaton and curious about seeing Floor Jansen with ReVamp, this was a very good opportunity to check out the facilities at Slim’s.

With the venue almost at capacity, ReVamp started their set very punctually at 7:30. Slim’s has a very small stage and with Iced Earth’s drum kit taking up a third of it, it was pretty tight for Floor Jansen and company. Quickly opening the set with their latest album title track, the band got the crowd going immediately. Floor is a very experience front woman (After Forever, Nightwish) and the crowd responded very well. All tracks from the band’s albums got great response from their fans and the band give them their best. Being ReVamp’s first tour in the USA, they have some pretty solid following thanks to Floor and we sure hope to see them again playing a longer set since today they only played for 30 minutes or so.

Set list:

Wild Card
The Anatomy of a Nervous Breakdown: The Limbic System
Head Up High
The Anatomy of a Nervous Breakdown: Neurasthenia
In Sickness 'Till Death Do Us Part: Disdain
Wolf and Dog

After moments of great expectations, Sabaton took the stage by storm and delivered one of the best live performances we have seen in a while. Joakim’s stage presence is amazing and gets everybody fired up. The band’s signature sounds comes across majestically and they transmit their energy to all the concert goers. Particularly when the band played Carolus Rex, Slim’s went nuts. Most of the people at the show had a Sabaton shirt, or ended up with one after their set. It is quite impressive to see how Sabaton is gaining recognition in the USA with every tour and album they put out. The band played a very intense set as sweat was dripping from all the band members faces. Again, the smaller set limited the band’s antics, but they still delivered the best set of the evening. We can’t wait to see them live again and see what people think about their upcoming release “Heroes”.

Set list:

Ghost Division
Gott Mit Uns
Carolus Rex
Swedish Pagans
To Hell and Back
White Death
40:1
The Art of War
Primo Victoria
Metal Crüe

As one of the ‘historic’ bands in Metal, Iced Earth headlined the show (and the tour) promoting their latest release “Plagues of Babylon”. We have never been great fans of the band and after a few songs got a bit bored. Their sound was amazing and you can hear all their tracks perfectly, also the stage seemed more comfortable for them (no need for a drum kit on the side of it!), but they didn’t have as much intensity as the opening acts. Slim’s acoustics are great, and with every band they did their best to make them sound as good as they could.

Set list:

Plagues of Babylon
Democide
Burning Times
V
The Hunter
Red Baron/Blue Max
If I Could See You
Boiling Point
Vengeance Is Mine
Cthulhu
My Own Savior
Encore:
The Coming Curse
Dystopia
Watching Over Me
Iced Earth

As our first ‘known’ Metal band’s show, the experience was excellent. We would definitely come back to cover other shows in this venue. Thanks to Loana at Nuclear Blast for making it happen and a special shout out to the San Francisco Metal Meet up people that attended the show and shared some beers with us, we are looking forward to the next show.
