Majestic Downfall – The Blood Dance (2012)

cover

With seven pummeling hymns of Death/Doom at its finest, today we have Mexico’s Majestic Downfall and their latest release “The Blood Dance”. This one-man band fronted by Jacobo Córdova (ex Antiqua) packs some serious punch and delivers mournful compositions filled with heavy guitars and brutal growls. If you are a fan from older Death/Doom Metal bands, you should definitely check this one out.

Quickly deceiving with an acoustic guitar intro to “The Blood Dance”, Majestic Downfall quickly delivers the first brutal blow with some deep growls and pummeling guitar riffs. The riffing is very traditional of the genre but the variations through the song is what makes it very appealing and different from other Death/Doom releases that bore the listener after the 40th iteration of a particular riff. The same applies to the well balanced “From Black to Dead”, a song where the tempo changes make it dynamic and not feel like 11 minutes have passed.

“Majestic Embrace” has more of a Mournful Congregation feeling, but with some more BPM’s. The song is very dark and with its slowdowns, it sounds somewhat different to what the first tracks showcased. For a traditional Doom track, “Dimensions Plague” features a similar structure to what Isole and similar bands have been doing for several years and still appeal to listener. The guitar solo is excellent and nicely contrasts the rest of the music in this track.

The weeping guitars on tracks like “An Unraveled Road” give that excellent feeling that Death/Doom transmit to the listeners, and also show that Majestic Downfall is clearly up to par with any European band in this genre. The clean sections on the tracks nicely change the pace, but it is clearly the variation between the riffs that keep this release engaging since the first track. “Cronos” closes the album with some experimentation and more clean vocals, very interesting indeed, but hopefully the band keeps delivering the pummeling growls instead of changing to clean singing in the future.

If you are a Death/Doom fan, you will completely enjoy this release since the first few minutes. The band delivers powerful and diverse riffs paired with deep and pummeling growls. If you like Mournful Congregation, Shape of Despair, My Dyring Bride, Isole, etc, you will surely not want to miss “The Blood Dance”, and keep an eye out for any future releases of Majestic Downfall.
