Schattenlicht – Erinnerung (2011)

cover

Hailing from Austria, today we have the furious debut of Schattenlicht. Featuring seven tracks of brutal Black Metal with a melodic edge, this debut CD is one of the strongest ones we have received this year and will surely impress even the most pick Black Metal fans. Pairing traditional Black Metal riffing with some more melodic and interestingly crafted sections, this band sounds aggressive and yet intelligent enough but never falling into the cliché’s of the current trend of ‘hipster Black Metal’ bands.

After a nice momentum building and mysterious intro track “Am Abgrund”, the band blows things wide opening with the hyper-destructive “Ein Blick in die Tiefe”. Immediately reminding us of Horna and similar band, this two person outfit does a great job in crafting powerful and yet simple riffs that make their sound so vicious and crushing. The vocals are straight out of hell and the drums are very well crafted allowing the song to not get drowned by them.

Opening with a melodic intro, “Erinnerung” nicely develops into a mid-tempo Black Metal agonizing hymn. The doominess of some sections of this track makes it excellent for people that like a more melancholic Black Metal, from bands like Celestia and such. The closing minutes of the following track “Verzweifelnd träumend” are very well crafted and show some good solos. Our favorite track has to be the multi-faceted “Gefangen”, and its powerful guitar work and melodic passages. This is and excellent track that features several different tempos and powerful aggressive sections.

Closing the album with more melodic brilliance, “Frei” delivers a powerful guitar driven aggressive piece that had us head banging for quite a while. Just as the album calmly started, it also ends with the outro “Brücken” and with this an excellent release comes to and end. One cool feature about this CD is that it’s made to look like a CD-sized vinyl record, something very cool indeed.

Generally speaking, “Erinnerung” is a pretty solid debut album from a very promising band. While the ‘core’ Black Metal approach has been done to death in the past, the band manages to imprint their own uniqueness into the mix and creating a very well balanced album that shows maturity and creativity. If you like powerful Black Metal with some melodic sections, don’t waste any time and get this great release.
