Revolution Renaissance – Trinity (2010)

cover

“Trinity” is the swansong release of Revolution Renaissance, a band formed by Timo Tolkki after his departure from Stratovarius in 2008. This release features a vibe very similar to Stratovarius back in the old days, and for over 45 minutes, we get treated to some brilliant simple-yet-elegant Power Metal songs that never sound dull or pretentious.

Love him or hate him, Timo Tolkki is one of the best guitarists that Metal has produced over the years, and his music songwriting abilities are equally impressive. Most of his stuff with Stratovarius and Revolution Renaissance previous albums are proof of his abilities (except for his terrible last two ‘solo’ albums). In “Trinity” he sticks to the basics of traditional Power Metal, with epic vocals (courtesy of Gus Monsanto), catchy guitar melodies, brilliant solos, super tight drumming, and subtle keyboard arrangements.

Since the first track “Marching with the Fools”, we get treated to powerful riffs and brilliant vocal lines that are a very powerful indicator what is to come in this release. We particularly like that there aren’t many ‘over the top’ vocal layering effects, this allows the music to sound more naturally and never gets overwhelming, like on other Power Metal bands. The guitar and keyboard solos are very impressive in this song, as well as the catchy chorus section that we can’t seem to get out of our head.

In songs like “A Lot like Me”, we also get a pounding bass guitar line that nicely accompanies the vocal melody of this song. This creates buildup for when the guitars start their rhythmical assault to provide the song with a thicker atmosphere. The mixing in songs like this is superb since it allows the ‘showcases’ instruments to be heard perfectly while the rest of them do their job.

Our favorite song of “Trinity” has to be “Crossing the Rubicon”, a track that has everything: epic melodic guitars, powerful singing, brilliant drumming, and a catchy bass guitar line. This shows song in particular, shows the great potential this band had into being a direct competitor with Stratovarius and maybe even a better band than them (in our blasphemous opinion), too bad that Timmo decided to put an end to this band.

In general, if you are a Power Metal fan from the older days where there was less symphonic elements and studio over production, you will LOVE “Trinity”. Even if you hate Timo Tolkki, you should check this album out since it features 9 brilliant songs that will get your attention since the first spin. We could only wish we had more albums coming from Revolution Renaissance, but for now, “Trinity” will have to do.
