Necronoclast – Haven (2008)

cover

Necronoclast is a one man band from Scotland that mixes black metal with some doom influences. While I can see why people compare this band to Xasthur, and maybe older Katatonia, I don’t find any evident Opeth influences in their music. “Haven” features almost 50 minutes of slow and ‘different’ black metal. The problem is that this album gets dull after the first 10 minutes.

I’ve never been a fan of Xasthur and probably that’s why I don’t like this release. The vocals are pretty standard and would go perfectly with a faster paced black metal. The guitar riffs are slow and painful, but they all sound very similar and after a few tracks they get old. The drums sound like a drum machine and since they are repetitive and they sound very similar and all tracks.

Overall this album has some good parts that truly remind me of early Katatonia, but they are easily forgotten. These few moments of brilliance can’t make this release an overall success, but I can point out that if this band keeps improving, their interesting mix of generes should be good at some point.
