Colonel Blast – For the Greater Good (2010)

cover

Once we listen to an album for one or two times we usually have an idea of what to say about it, when it came to “For the Greater Good” we are still short on words to describe it, but we will try to do our best. This band combines almost every possible genre of Metal together and creates a very unique and crushing sound.

The band quickly starts of their album showing their riffage power and drumming skills. However, the screamed vocals on this song (and others) are quite annoying since they sound like a cat is getting hit by a bus or something. Some people might dig this, but we don’t, however the growls used through the album are decent enough to make up for them, and the music is what interested us the most.

Putting the vocals aside, Colonel Blast has great potential when it comes to writing extremely diverse songs that are brutal, fast, and catchy. The band does a great job when it comes to song writing and technical abilities. In the 30 minutes that “For the Greater Good” lasts, the band quickly grabs the listener’s attention and never let’s go. This album sure made for a quite an entertaining listening experience for us.

Every single song in this album has different influences that will make you think WTF at first but then you will be actually impressed on how well those influences work together. For example the song “Savour the Flavour” features very straight forward riffing and harsh howling from the band’s vocalist, then it suddenly transforms into a more Death Metal section with brutal growls and massive drumming. This quickly progresses into a slow-paced melodic section that you would have never expected. This is pretty much how the rest of the album works, a brilliant showcase of odd combinations of styles that work extremely well together.

The album’s main foundations are very aggressive so if you expected something to play to your grandma, stay away from this album. But if you want an aggressive combination of different musical genres with some brutal singing (some people we think might like it), then go out an get “For the Greater Good”. Colonel Blast have all the qualities of a great band that has a very unique sound, polishing their songs a bit more and getting an even better production will do wonders for them.
