Neuronia - Follow the White Mouse (2010)

cover

Presented in a lush digipack, today we have all the way from Poland Neuronia and their second full-length album “Follow the White Mouse”. With a very hard to describe style, the band manages to merge elements of Thrash, Heavy and Melodic Death Metal in a multi-textured release that is very enjoyable from start to end.

With a very unique style, Neuronia’s music is very enjoyable since it features influences from tons of different genres and bands, keeping things fresh and unpredictable. The only thing we quickly noticed is that we are not big fans of the vocals since they tend to get on our nerves a bit, and even after a few listens. However, they are not bad at all is just a particular singing style that irritates us (the ‘main’ one from the several different ones presented in this album) from the past, but the band’s music is good enough for us to ignore this little detail.

Kicking things off with a hypnotic intro that spills into the first track of the album “Make Them Die”, the band starts their musical journey in a very commanding way with tight drumming, crunching guitars and some very interesting tempo changes through the song. The vocal styles presented in this track are very diverse and add to the overall richness of the song.

The thing we love the most of “Follow the White Mouse”, is the fact that the band manages to keep things fresh in every single song of the album. Songs like “White Mouse” and “Faster” feature completely different structures, but they still flow very nicely. The tempos in songs like “Death has come to Town” and “Slipping into Oblivion” feel very chaotic but just the right amount to be highly enjoyable and allow the listener to be shaken up and never find a dull moment in the album.

Our favorite track of the album is “November Skies”, probably the most ‘straight forward’ song in this release. The combination of a slow pace with crushing double kick sections and a variety of clean vocal styles makes this song a very magical one. The guitar work as in the rest of the album is excellent and the solos are very nicely weaved into the song’s overall structure.

In general, we think that “Follow the White Mouse” is by far one of the most refreshing and different albums we have heard in quite a while. The band manages to seamlessly blend all kinds of influences in this release and pull it off graciously. The album’s production is top notch and easily comparable to anything produced by bigger bands. We can only expect bigger (this release only lasts 32 minutes) and better things from the band in the future so go and get this release and get into Neumonia’s original musical style.
